Why Does it Always Rain on Me?

Well, as our Scottish Band Travis dissected in their 1999 hit song, because, well, it always mostly does! In Scotland anyway. And to be fair, that's the main point of the blog here - rain - on your wedding day - even if Fran Healys lyrics do take us down a very different philosophical direction!
or how about Alanis Morrissette's 'Ironic' - ‘It’s like raaaayeeeainnnn on your wedding day’ - 'isn't it ironic'!
And if you are like me, and know the songs, you'll be singing it in your head as you read this!
Anyway, I digress!
I had the pleasure of conducting a wedding ceremony on Friday for the most beautiful couple. As an aside to this, it really is the most amazing feeling for a Celebrant to marry two people so deeply in love!
In typical Scottish fashion however and given the unpredictability of the Scottish weather (it's really actually quite predictable - forecast? Rain!), the clouds opened and the rain fell.......in buckets! It was like a pipe burst in the sky! Not the weather you hope for on your wedding day!
But! And this is where the rain gets quite magical! On your wedding day at least!
.......Rain on your wedding day is actually very good luck! Because it signifies that your marriage will last! Us Celebrants are really big on symbolism and symbolic gestures and what's more symbolic than nature giving you a message - that your marriage will be strong and successful!
I have to prefix this also with saying that just because it doesn't rain on your wedding day, it doesn't mean that your marriage won't be successful! Of course it will! The root to every successful marriage is a strong partnership, one based on love and commitment! Rain, hail or shine!
But, I love the romanticism contained within the symbolism of rain on your Wedding Day!
As you will know (and if you didn't, well you will certainly know now!), a knot that becomes wet, is extremely hard to untie. Therefore when you marry or 'tie the knot', on a rainy day, your marriage is just as hard to unravel! And if you are choosing to do a traditional Scottish hand-fast during your ceremony, or perhaps have seen this done before at another ceremony you have been to, this romantic idea of rain, was taken from when couples literally tied the knot, during their wedding ceremony, way back in the 1700's!
So you see, rain, on your wedding day, really can be, the most beautiful thing!
(Just make sure you bring an umbrella!)
